5. Good offering

Drake stared at the door, expecting someone would come to his aid as his entire body was stiff. Soon after, a male servant entered to see him.

"You're awake," the servant said as he approached the bed. Drake's expressionless face caught his attention.

Drake had never seen him before and the room he was in now. He wanted to speak but couldn't move his tongue, so he tried to communicate with him through his eyes.

“Do you need something?”

Drake closed his eyes and nodded at the same time. He wanted to pee and felt like he got naked from the blanket covering up his body to chest.

After making sure of his condition, the servant exited the room. “He woke up, ma'am.”

“Finally. Make ready his meal and bring it to the room. I’m gonna see him.”

The servant bowed a bit until the old woman made her way to the exit. She used a cane to help her walk. At almost sixty years old, she looked quite fit despite the wrinkles on her face.

"How are you, Child?" she came closer and smiled down at him. "I found you lying under a tree. You were badly injured, so I took you home to me."

She breathed space, then she sat down on the single couch noticing him.

“I can't take you to the hospital. Don't worry, the doctor has treated you," she went on. "You must be asking how I found you. Coincidentally, I had just arrived and was heading to the park bench. I accidentally saw you fainting on the grass. I don't know how long you've passed out there, but I've been waiting for you for three hours since the doctor examined you.”

Her house? Drake said thank you through his eyes.

"Sorry, my assistant had to unpack your stuff on your suitcase to find your ID card, Drake."

Drake was startled by the old woman saying that. He could breathe in relief that he wasn’t in the Johnsons’ mansion, but he also wouldn’t stop to keep himself from thinking about his whereabouts. He never knew her.

Two servants came in bringing meals for Drake. The man one permitted after putting the tray down onto the table. The girl stayed to nurse him.

“You must be hungry, Child. Time to eat then take medicine.” The old woman waved her hand to her servant. “Hope you get well soon. I’ll be back after going through with my business.”

She abandoned Drake with the servant. For fifteen days, she met his needs, treated him well, and spoke various topics with him. The doctor came to visit him every three days. Drake was slowly getting better, the ache and scars on his body slowly faded away. During that time he did not contact his mother, either.

The old woman asked him to meet her in the workroom.

“Well, I’ve given you my hospitality as long as you are here in my house, but Drake, you know there’s no free lunch in this world." She went to the point.

Drake was stunned hearing her words to lead him thinking about a billing he had to pay. The old woman named Jessie looked at him deep into his black eyes.

“I want you to work in my company. After my assistant found your profile information, you were The Johnson’s ex-son-in-law and got laid off from his company.”

“Yes, I’m. But why do you ask me to work for your company, ma'am?”

Jessie stood up from his work chair, walking towards Drake who was sitting across his desk. "Son, you're unemployed, you need money for your mom. Aren't you glad you got a job?"

“Of course, I’m excited. They fired me without logical reason,” Drake answered in a gloomy face. “But, ma'am, you’re very kind to me. Nursing and giving me all the facilities, then now, you want me to work for you in your company. It’s …"

Drake wasn’t able to go on with his comment. It touched his heart, which caused him to lose all his words even for only saying thank you. That was the most beautiful gift he ever had, like a miracle.

Jessie smiled, standing beside him using her pikestaff. “I consider you to accept this offer.”

Then, she shifted some papers to Drake. “So, Drake, here is all you need to read and sign. Read it carefully.”

Drake rubbed the water that blurred his eyes. When reading the contract, his brows knitted then gave her a perplexing expression.

“Why do you give the CEO position to me?”

“Based on the information I received, you were treated badly, used to being bullied and abused by people around them. Particularly Diana, she slapped your face several times, making you her maid, she never gives any respect to you. Don’t you want to take revenge on them?" Jessie explained to wash his brain elegantly, motherhood, but firm. “With the position, you have money and power to stand with them. No more humiliation and poverty.”

Drake couldn’t say anything unless fixed on his glare at her. His brain went blank from the beginning Jessie spoke. He couldn't believe his dream to avenge coming true with ease.

“What will you say to your mother about your fake marriage, their demeanor and termination? Will you be ready to tell her?” Jessie convinced him in a belief that she wasn’t going to get his rejection. “She must be worried about you cos for almost a week you don’t keep in touch with her.”

His eyes twinkled when something came into his mind. “But why do you do this to me, ma'am?”

“Cos you deserve it besides you’re an International business graduate. I think you’re eligible to that position. My assistant will teach you so you can learn it with ease.”

“You know everything about me.”

“Absolutely, Son.” Jessie was still with her smile that made her look more elegant in her age.

Drake couldn’t agree more with her statement and thought that it was his opportunity to make them pay. However, Drake wasn’t sure the reason she told him was the only excuse she possessed. Another thought was playing in his head that Jessie wanted something else from him. In addition, he didn’t believe in his capability for the job title either.

“I don’t have any working experience in management or middle level. I lack the skill needed for this job. I’m from the ground level, ma'am.”

“I told you my assistant will direct you all you need to sit on the chair.” Jessie moved around the desk to sit back on her chair. Watching Drake seemed to be in doubt, she said again, “Look, I don’t want to tell you this actually. But I see a hesitation in your eyes, so you’ll get what you want to know.”

Jessie took a deep breath some times before starting over.
